How much does the atmosphere weigh over each square kilometer (km2)? Recall that 106 m2 = 1 km2.

In the last question you calculated that the atmosphere weighs 10 tons over each square meter. Answering this question requires that you first calculate how many square meters there are in a square kilometer. There are 1000 m in 1 km.

Squaring both sides gives: (1000)2 m2 = 1 km2. Thus:

10 tons/m2 x 106 m2/km2 = 10 x 106 tons/km2 = 10 million tons/km2
