Law enforcement in the United States exists at the federal, state, and local levels. Legislative and jurisdictional limitations on the investigatory responsibilities of particular agencies, and the technical investigatory specialization of other agencies, serve to explain the existence of the widely varied types of public law enforcement agencies.
