What is the total molar concentration of ions in a 1.225 M solution of CH3OH? I know that the dissociation of CH3OH has something to do with finding the total molar concentration of ions but I still cant seem to figure out the correct answer. Help please! Read 2406 times 1 Reply

The pKa of methanol is 15.5, meaning it will dissociate in water an order of magnitude less than water itself. Since the concentration of H+ and OH- in pure water is 1x10^-7 M each, there will be about 2x10^-7 M total ion concentration in pure water. The dissociation of methanol to H+ and CH3O- will be about a tenth of this, bringing the total ion concentration to 2.2x10^-7 M.
